The Washington Wizards were once called the Washington Bullets. The owner of the Wizards Abe Polin changed the name of the team, feeling that the name the Bullets was named incorrectly, and it was simply tied to violence way too often.
Limited Success
The Bullets/Wizards have had a very rough time no matter what their name is. Wes Unseld was a legendary player, but he was listed as one of the worst coaches in NBA history back when he was the head coach of the team. The Washington Wizards have even struggled when they had elite players on their team in the 1990s. The team had Chris Webber, Juwan Howard and Rod Strickland on their roster. The team was only able to finish in the 8th place slot within the Eastern Conference. Webber was reportedly never really happy in Washington, the team was only able to have a minor amount of success under head coach Bernie Bickerstaff.
The ownership era
where Michael Jordan bought part of the team really did not go that well. Jordan was able to really help a player like Richard Hamilton begin to develop as a kind of tweener between a shooting guard and a small forward. For example though, the Wizards went 19-63 under Leonard Hamilton. Hamilton was a coach that come from the University of Miami off an extremely successful tenure. Jordan believed he would bring in a large number of young college players, really developing them in an extremely positive fashion. Jordan wanted the Washington Wizards to thrive within the world of player development.
Kwame Brown
The drafting of Kwame Brown was a big deal within the world of the Washington Wizards. You cannot deny the fact that the selection, which was made by Michael Jordan largely came across as a huge failure. Eddie Jordan was able to get quite a bit out of Kwame Brown, with the help of capable players like Gilbert Arenas and Jared Jeffries. Jeffries was the kind of player that may not have put up big numbers, but he did the the things that coaches like Jordan asked him to do. Kwame Brown simply wasn't that hungry as a young player. He would admit that he had too much money in the bank to stay hungry.
Princeton Offense
The Princenton offense is going to run its course in most situations, this means that people will figure out what Eddie Jordan wants to run and simply get ready for it. Flip Saunders may not have had a ton of success record wise with the Washington Wizards, but the drafting of John Wall ended up having a huge impact on the overall success of the franchise. Wall gives Saunders a lot of credit for making a successful drive and kick point guard that can read defenses.
The Wizards have added a couple of major players in Bradley Beal and Nene. Beal has to stay healthy in order for the Washington Wizards to make a peep playoff run. You can see the team competing in the Eastern Conference Finals for years to come.
