San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs were one of those extremely successful ABA franchises that transitioned well into the NBA. The Spurs were owned by Red McCombs and the team was able to make some playoff appearances under Larry Brown. The San Antonio Spurs were unable to have a ton of success under Jerry Tarkanian as the Spurs coach. He simply went on to spend a lot of time chewing on his signature towel. The Spurs had to find their way and great players like Sean Elliot and David Robinson really didn't come into their own until later in their careers. The Spurs were able to find their way once they got rid of some frustrating, and yet talented players like Dennis Rodman. John Lucas II was always trying to get the team going, but the ownership team would not let him the kind of roster that he needed in order to be successful. You have to have a solid roster in order to be a winner in the NBA.
The San Antonio Spurs were more about style and not necessarily toughness or a team game before Gregg Popovich got there. You want to be able to know that you have great players that really but into your system if you are going to be Gregg Popovich. Avery Johnson was really the floor general for those early Spurs teams, particularly once they drafted Tim Duncan. Duncan was always a humble guy, someone who would carry an assistant coach's bag when he played in college. Are you going to be unselfish? This is something that a player like Matt Bonner is definitely focused on. You want to be able to highlight the ability of the San Antonio Spurs to put very good international players like Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter on their roster.
The Spurs have won five championships since they drafted Tim Duncan. The team was able to have some capable players around Duncan to make all of this happen. Tony Parker has proven to make dynamic plays as a point guard that can get down the lane. Steve Kerr, Mario Elie and Robert Horry were playing a role on these championship teams. It takes a certain amount of leadership in order to win a championship. Elie and others would show a heavy amount of confidence during their playing days and thus they would go on to become coaches in this league as well.
Horry and other players may have downplayed the importance of having good off the court chemistry, but all of the San Antonio Spurs seem to get along well. It is also true that the San Antonio Spurs are able to make adjustments to their roster without really upsetting anyone. It will be interesting to see how the team works LaMarcus Aldridge into the fold. A Spurs team should have a good mixture of youth and experience. You can see this with players like Patty Mills and Aldridge simply becoming comfortable with the system. The San Antonio Spurs will continue to lean on Mills in the future.
