Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies started out as the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995 as the NBA's attempt to spread into Canada (the other team was known as the Toronto Raptors).

They continued under this team name and remained in the Midwest division until 2001 at which point they relocated to Memphis, Tennessee and were promptly renamed the Memphis Grizzlies. They are currently one of the youngest teams in the division but have a burning rivalry with the LA Clippers. They first found mainstream success in 2002 as they had just recently been trades Pau Gasol by the Atlanta Hawks. In 2002 Gasol was awarded NBA rookie of the and was considered as one of, if not, the best player on the team and the years he played on the team are known as the Gasol era which lasted from 2002 until 2007.

Another notable fact about Gasol is that he helped lead the team to their first NBA playoff in 2004 in which they were the 6th seed out of the west side, coincidentally their coach Hubie Brown won the NBA coach of the year for his efforts.

After this successful year Brown stepped down and was replaced by TNT analyst Mike Fratello who was able to improve the Grizzlies history of having a losing record and was able to snag a playoff position for the second consecutive year, unfortunately they got swept in the first round by the Phoenix suns.

The next year they continued the 2 year streak of playoffs and made it three consecutive years, they did this by adding veterans to their team and switched around other positions. The next year was unfortunately met with disaster as Gasol broke his ankle and the team started the season 5-17 without their star player and this lead to Fratello being fired.

They ended the season 22-60 which was the worst in the league and the interim coach for the year resigned after the season.

The next couple of years led to many different changes with multiple coaches which ended with Lionel Harris being named the teams permanent coach in 2009, there were also many player changes the team acquired Hasheem Thabeet and DeMarre Carroll around this time which helped the team improve.

By the time the 2009-10 season ended the team was 10th in the conference and had a 40-42 season. In the 2010-11 year the Grizzlies celebrated their tenth year in Memphis as well as the fact that they had secured the 8th place seed and a spot in the playoffs for the first time in years.

They achieved a franchise first this year as they won their first playoff game against the Antonio Spurs, this was only the second time a 8th seed had beaten a 1st seed in a best of 7 in all of NBA history.

In 2012 they found their way back into the playoffs to find themselves sent home early as the San Antonio Spurs beat them in the first round. 2013 was a franchise best as they finished 56-26 and in the playoffs avenged their loss from last year and beat the San Antonio Spurs in the playoffs and then lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a close 4-3 series.

Finally in 2014 the Grizzlies beat the Portland Trail Blazers in a best of five and then unfortunately closely lost to the first seeded Golden City Warriors in a best of 6 series.
