deserves top billing when you talk about those early Toronto Raptors teams. Marcus Camby was meant to be a leading big man for the Toronto Raptors as well, but he was unable to stay healthy during his younger years and in fact became a shot blocking machine for the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets as the years went by. The Raptors did not have very good rosters during a lot of those early years. You had Brendan Malone trying to instill solid defensive principles on a team that could not score very much. You had Zan Tabak as your main big man on some of those early teams, which means you are not going to get consistent play out of one of your most important positions.
That first roster for the Toronto Raptors had Ed Pickney on the team. His moves in the low post simply weren't as quick as they needed to be and Acie Earl was too injury prone at that juncture in order to do some of the things that people predicted he would be able to do coming out of the University of Iowa. You saw players like B.J. Armstrong going to the Toronto Raptors as a part of the expansion draft, but you also have to wonder whether his heart was truly into it.
After the team moved away from the Darrell Walker throwing a chair years, they moved into the much better Vince Carter seasons. The team was solid in many different ways, including the terrific play of a young Tracy McGrady and the steady hand of a point guard like Alvin Williams, out of Villanova. Williams played with Kerry Kittles during his time at Villanova, this is where he learned to play a good second or third fiddle. You also want to make sure that people knew about the contributions that a player like Charles Oakley made for those Toronto Raptors teams that made deep runs into the playoffs. Oakley would always speak with candor, particularly when he felt like Vince Carter may not have been doing enough as an elite player for the Toronto Raptors.
The Raptors still made some of those runs late into the playoffs despite a lack of emphasis of good on the ball defense, under the coaching schemes of Lenny Wilkens. Players like Vince Carter probably enjoyed not playing hard line defense because it allowed him to expend more energy on the defensive side of the floor.
The Raptors are getting by with a roster that has very few egos on it now. The team seems to be focused on having good passing rotations. DeMarre Carroll is going to have to play elite defense for the team to move forward. The Toronto Raptors are going to need an immense amount of scoring from Kory Joseph in order to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference, this not typically fit Kory Joseph's skill set. A lot of the Toronto Raptors are going to reach above and beyond in order to win the Eastern Conference.
