The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team that joined WCNBA (Western Conference of the National Basketball Association) in 1970, as an expansion team.
Their coach was Roland Todd. Situated in the North District of Portland, in Oregon, they play at the Moda Queen Center, originally known as the Rose Garden that opened in 1995.
The team are proud to have won 4 NBA Rookie of the Year Awards: with the most recent winner being that of Damian Lilliard in 2013. The NBA most Valuable Player Award was won in 1978 by Bill Walton.
The Portland Trail Blazers originally played games at the Memorial Coliseum, that is now next to the Moda Center. This was built in 1960, with a spectator capacity of 12,888.The Moda Queen Center has a capacity to seat 19,980 spectators that increases to increases to 20,580 spectators with standing room. The name was changed in 2013, from the original name of Rose Garden after the team's officials gained a $4 million deal with the Moda Health Corporation. This was met with considerable protest from their loyal fan base.
During the Trail Blazers 44 years in the game they have qualified 30 times for the NBA playoffs. 20 of these playoffs occurred in a straight row from 1983 through to 2003.
They have reached the finals of the NBA Championships three times and they won in 1977, this was after only 7 seasons in the Championship.
The team's worst season was their second one in 1992, when they had a final score of just 18 64.
During the 1977/78 they could not quite capture their success of the previous season and scored 58-24. In the following season of 1978/79, they really suffered with the loss of an injured Bill Walton, but still managed to score a 45-37 record to reach the playoffs.
During the 1980/81 season, they were joined by new team members Jim Paxson and Mychal Thompson, who helped them to reach third place in the play offs.
The Portland Trail Blazers are owned by the Microsoft co founder, Paul Allen and are often referred to as Rip City.
Another nickname is that of Balzers.
Their mascot is Blaze the Trailcat, and has been so since 2002. Before then they never had an official mascot.
To date the Portland Trail Blazers have donated their resources to five non-profit organizations who have an impact upon the lives of children. They include; Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, PLAYWORKS, SMART and Urban League of Portland.
