Sting, its true name Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, born October 2, 1951 in Wallsend near Newcastle (Northern England) is a British singer, musician and occasional film actor. Before his solo career, he was the singer and bassist of the Group The Police. Son of a slag (Ernest Sumner) and a hairdresser (Audrey Cowell), eldest of a family of four children, (a brother Philip, and two sisters Angela and Anita), he is passionate about early music, encouraged by his mother, amateur pianist. He made his first musical weapons to the guitar but also discovered the piano, mandolin, saxophone, harmonica and flute of Pan. It follows the course of the Northern Counties College of Education from 1971 to 1974 and then will be teacher for two years at the St. Paul's Middle School in Cramlington. It is during these years he played with groups of jazz in the evening and weekends. His nickname, "sting" is assigned in 1972 after the concert of one of these groups, the Phoenix Jazzmen, while he was wearing a black sweater with yellow stripes on stage. The trombone and leader of the group, a certain Gordon Soloman, was that it looked like a bee, from which the name ("sting" means "Darter" or "bite"). In 1977, while Sting is the bassist and singer of the Group of jazz fusion Last Exit, Stewart Copeland, then a bassist, seeking the discovers a concert and offers him to form a group with French guitarist Henry Padovani (the latter being replaced later by Andy Summers).
