Stephen Hough (born November 22, 1961 in United Kingdom) is a pianist, writer and composer of classical music. Became an Australian citizen in 2005 and, therefore, has dual nationality. Hough was born in Heswall (then named Cheshire) in the pen�nsula of Wirral, and grew up in Hoylake, where he began taking piano lessons at age 5. It was a finalist in the competition of young musicians of the year of the BBC in 1978 and won the piano section. In 1982, he won the Terence Judd award in United Kingdom. In 1983 he won first prize in the international competition of Naumburg Piano in New York. Hough appeared as recitalist and chamber musician, and has performed as soloist with major orchestras of the world, such as the Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, the ��ngeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Toronto, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestrathe New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berl�n, the United Kingdom Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Malaysia, of the city of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Singapore. He has recorded more than 40 CDs. Some of the more iportantes is a collection of four piano concertos from Rachmaninoff and the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, recorded during a live performance with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the baton of music director Andrew Littonwhich they have been compared to the recordings of the composer himself. These recordings earned him his seventh Gramophone Award, as� as the prize of the Cr�tica BRIT of classical music. Hough has a master's degree from the Juilliard School and was the winner of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2001.Ha studied with Heather Slade-Lipkin, Gordon Green and Derrick Wyndham. It is also an important composer and transcriber, and often includes his own works in his recitals. The premiere of his Concerto for cello, written by Steven Isserlis, took place in March 2007, and in the summer of the same year the abad�a of Westminster and Westminster Cathedral performed masses he wrote. He is Professor of piano at the Royal Academy of music in London and international Professor of Piano studies at the Royal Northern University of music in Manchester.
