The rebellion des Patriotes, rebellion of lower-Canada, or simply rebellions of 1837-38 are three names given to the military conflict of 1837-1838 in the British colony of Bas-Canada (today Quebec). It is the culmination of a latent political conflict which had existed since the beginning of the 19th century between the civilian population and the colonial military occupier. Simultaneous with the rebellion of Upper-Canada, in the neighbouring colony of Upper-Canada, the two formed the rebellions of 1837. The rebellion of 1837-1838 in lower Canada was much more violent than in high-Canada. After the conquest of the new France by Britain in 1759, the Government of lower-Canada (today, Quebec) is provided by a Governor General appointed by London and it assumes absolute powers. The 1763 Treaty of Paris confirmed the loss of the colony and trade becomes exclusively turned to the British Empire, through its merchants, including especially those of Boston. Immigration is limited to British nationals and only those who take the test oath may occupy a position in the civil administration, which means renouncing the Catholic religion and the authority of the Pope. This change has therefore transformed the former French colonists in second-class citizens. The war of American independence will be a first change in this status. The Quebec Act of 1774 allows people to practice the Catholic religion and to be part of the administration without having to take the oath of the test.
