Phil Lesh (born March 15, 1940 in Berkeley, California) is a bassist, a founding member of the Grateful Dead Rock group. He played in this group during its thirty years of existence. Phil Lesh started learning the violin. High school, he passes to trumpet and played in the Orchestra "san mateo college Jazz band". He had a particular interest in avant-garde classical music and free jazz.He studied music with Italian Luciano Berio at Mills College with as companion of class composer Steve Reich, and future keyboard of the Grateful Dead Tom Constanten. With which it begins to play. At University he met Jerry Garcia and they take friendship. At the concert at Frenchy's at Fremont, in July 1965, Phil Lesh played with the group "the Warlocks" Jerry Garcia for the first time. Lesh intends to become the bassist of Jerry Garcia rock group; "the Warlocks". Lesh noted that another group was already the name of "the Warlocks". He suggested to the other members of the group to change the name that changes their name to Grateful Dead. Garcia said he had received the best music education, as a student in music"... Phil Lesh had never played bass before joining the group, which meant he learned on the job ". He had no a priori on the role of the rhythmic section in a rock band. His model has been more influenced by Bach counterpoint than bassists of rock and soul musicians (although it can found the fluidity and the power of a bass player of jazz such as Charles Mingus or Jimmy Garrison in the work of Phil Lesh). Phil Lesh, with Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, and Jack Casady, was an innovator in the place that bass should take in the mid 60.Ils have allowed this instrument played stronger with a dominant stamp. Lesh conducts its own improvisations during the songs. In the improvisations of the Grateful Dead, Lesh bass is as important as the guitar of Jerry Garcia.The important place given to the bass is a characteristics of the San Francisco Sound. "Phil Lesh was not a composer or singer prolific with the Grateful Dead, although he has contributed to several songs;""new potato caboose", "Box of Rain", "unbroken chain" and "pride of cucamonga", but his interest in avant-garde music had a significant influence on the Grateful Dead.
