Paavo Nurmi was born on June 13, 1897 in Turku, harbour town of the southwest of the Finland, in a humble family, his father was cabinet-maker. At the age of nine years, at a local fair, Nurmi won a race between classmates on 1 500 metres. Military in 1919, he performs a walk of 15 km in 59 min 24 s, ending more than a half hour in advance on its competitors.
