NOFX (pronounced [noÊ?εfεks]) is a group of Californian punk skate formed in 1983 by "Fat Mike", Erik Sandin, and Eric Melvin in Los Angeles. NOFX has been described by the alternative press of "funniest band in rock and roll" (the group the most funny of rock and roll). The name of NOFX is inspired, by mockery towards artificial, bloated and pretentious group names often used at the time, from a short-lived hardcore group called Negative FX, which had registered only a single album before split. Although three of the members, while still teenagers, of NOFX have been straight edge at the time, NOFX has never been a straight-edge group, and the X in the name does not refer to this movement. A popular rumor is indeed that the name of NOFX is a sort of acronym for "No fucking straight edge". Neither the group nor any reliable source confirm this version: it is not impossible that this legend comes the NOFX is soon implemented to make a mockery of the straight edge movement and showcase real or humorouspractice in complete opposition to ethics straight edge (consumption of drugs and alcohol, apparent enhancement of sexual licence,...). Originally, Eric Melvin was the singer of the group, but having trouble to play and sing at the same time, Fat Mike took over. However, Eric Melvin sings some songs and weird vocalizations (the Yell Mell) shoot. They realize their first titles under the name NOFX (album) in 1984 on Mystic Records. It's actually two EP which was raised later on an album by Mystic, without the notice musicians. They recorded Liberal Animation in 1988 with Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion. The following year, the group signed with Epitaph Records (label of Brett Gurewitz) and fate SandM Airlines (1989) and Ribbed in 1990 and in 1991, NOFX undergoes many changes, however, the three original members are gathered together and "el hefe" is added to the trio to form a Quartet. During this same year, the group appears Liberal Animation on Epitaph records. It was in 1994, with the release of Punk in Drublic, NOFX became popular. The title of the album (spoonerism of "Drunk in Public", pissed in public) reflects the State of mind of NOFX: punk attitude, music fast and aggressive, fresh humour low ceiling and festive.
