György Ligeti is a Romanian composer / Austrian naturalized Hungarian, born in Diciosânmartin in Romania (Hungarian: Dicsöszentmárton, today TârnÄ?veni) on 28 May 1923 and died on June 12, 2006 in Vienna. Initially trained at the conservatoire de Cluj/Kolozsvà r in Transylvania, young Ligeti had to interrupt his studies in 1943, following the anti-Jewish measures taken successively by the Regent Horthy (which the army had reoccupied most of the Austro-Hungarian ex-territoire vested in the Romania by the Treaty of Trianon) and the arrow cross regime. The almost all of his family disappeared in deportation (only his mother survived). After the second world war, he went to study music and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, before to take refuge in Vienna.
