Kinyatta Marsalis is a trombonist and music producer of jazz, brother Wynton, Branford, and Jason and the son of Ellis Marsalis. The third of the Marsalis brothers was born in New Orleans, the capital of jazz and blues, and with 13 years began studying trombone. He studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and received classical training in other institutions. In 1982, after having already recorded his first album as a producer at age 17, he joined at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he studied instrument and music production. As a producer he has been so far more than 70 works with such important artists such as Harry Connick, Jr., Marcus Roberts, Spike Lee, or the remaining members of the Marsalis clan. As a trombonist, he has worked with Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach. In addition, the musician has released so far three works under his own name: "Pontius Pilate's Decision" (1992), "musashi" (1997), and "minions dominion" (2006) at the end of 2010 was finalizing the recording of their album "sweet thunder", whose publication is scheduled for 2011. In addition to his work as producer and as là­der, Kinyatta Marsalis has developed an important career as a teacher and as a composer of music for film and television. Inspired by the great J.J.Johnson, Kinyatta Marsalis is, like his brothers, a virtuous continuator of the musical tradition of jazz and the espà­ritu of New Orleans which has established its own right as one of the most fresh voices of the instrument.
