Amadou and Mariam is a musical duo from Malà­, composed of Mariam Doumbia (vocals, born in Bamako, April 15, 1958) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals, born in Bamako, October 24, 1954). The couple met at the Institute for young blind of Mali. The duo specializes in music that mixes the traditional rhythms of his homeland with electric guitars, Syria violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Indian boards and Dogon percussion, giving way to a style known as "afro-blues". Between 1974 and 1980, Amadou was part of the group Les Ambassadeurs du Hotel. In the past year, the couple married, and began to play in the field of music while Amadou continued his successful solo career and directed the music programs of the Institute for the blind. In 1985, the couple habà­a already achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Malian blues after a tour to Burkina Faso. The following year, they moved to Ivory Coast, where they recorded several albums before traveling to Parà­s where they recorded Sou Ni Tile, which became a success in France expanding the popularity of the group throughout Europe. In 2003, were contacted with the music star Manu Chao, who produced his album Dimanche à Bamako ("Sunday in Bamako"). In 2006, participated in the recording of Celebrate the day, the official anthem of the FIFA World Cup in 2006 with Herbert Grönemeyer.
